What exactly is an occupancy sensor?

The Occupancy Sensor is basically a thin mat which is embedded inside the cushion of the passenger seat. Its job is to basically detect the presence of a passenger sat on the seat when the car is running.

Why do they have one?

The whole point of having one is so that there is no need for the passenger airbag to go off in the event of an accident – when there is nobody sat in the passenger seat. This will obviously save money when repairing the car.

How does it actually work then?

You can consider the mat as a very simple circuit. When somebody is sat on the seat, the resistance increases and when there is nobody sat, the resistance decreases. So basically it’s a clever switch which has 2 wires coming out of it. One white and one blue.

Will models of car will this module work on?

This module will work on most BMW and Mercedes cars. Please see the relevant pages of this website for supported models.

Will the light go off straight away after fitting your module?

In some cases, the light goes off straight away and you don’t need to do anything. However, sometimes the ECU needs to be reset by a computer and this can be done at a local garage or by yourself if you have a reset tool. Please remember that you are only diagnosing the fault with this emulator

Does the driver’s seat have one?

No.

Why do they break so easily?

The mat is very delicate. Heavy passengers can damage it as well as repeatedly pressing your knee on the cushion. When they break the sensor will either give a short circuit (no resistance) or an open circuit (infinite resistance).

Can the mats not be repaired?

Basically, the mat cannot be repaired. Once broken, it needs to be replaced and the cost of this is in excess of £300 when replaced by the  main dealer.

How does our emulator work then?

The emulator is made up of a special circuit with a resistance equivalent to that of a normal occupancy mat. The ECU will think that the mat is working and hence the light will go off. It must be remembered though, that this is only for diagnosis purposes.

How do I test my airbag system using your emulator?

A full colour set of instructions will be provided on delivery. If you can fit a 13amp plug then you can fit our module!

What about using a child seat in the front of the car, how is this affected?

This emulator should not remain fitted in your vehicle as it is purely for diagnosis of your fault. If you choose to leave it fitted then you do so at your own risk as the passenger airbag will remain active at all times. Please read the Legal Information page.

My car is not listed, what can I do?

Please contact us through the website by sending us an email. We will let you know within 24hours whether we can help.

When will my product arrive

Delivery is normally between 1-2 working days. If you have been waiting longer than this please contact us immediately.

Is it safe?

The Seat Occupancy Emulator is completely safe for diagnosis purposes.

Is it easy to install?

The Seat Occupancy Module is very easy to install and comes complete with the Easy Installation Guide.

What are the pros to bypassing the occupancy sensor?

The main advantage is that it is cheaper and quicker to diagnose a faulty mat in the seat. Dealerships will charge a fortune to diagnose the same fault.

What are the cons to bypassing the occupancy sensor?

None if it is used purely to diagnose the fault in your airbag system. All other uses of this product will be considered as misuse.
